Hair colouring: roots or full colour — and how to make it last

When a root touch-up is enough and when full colour is better, how to prepare, and how to care for coloured hair so the colour doesn't fade.

Hairstyle at SANLE — work by our hair stylist

A new hair colour changes your look in an instant, but keeping it beautiful starts the moment you leave the salon. In this article you'll learn when a root touch-up is enough, when full colour makes more sense, how to prepare, and which habits keep your colour fresh and vibrant for weeks.

Roots or full colour?

Root touch-up

If you're happy with your colour and your roots have simply grown out, colouring just the roots is enough. The dye goes only on the new growth, so your lengths and ends aren't exposed to extra chemicals. Roots usually need refreshing every 4–6 weeks. A root colour at SANLE costs 45₾.

Full colour

Full colour is better if you want to change your shade, your ends have faded and the tone looks uneven, or you're colouring your hair for the first time. Full colour at SANLE costs 60₾.

Choosing a colour

  • Staying within two shades of your natural colour is easiest to maintain: regrowth is less noticeable and the hair is less stressed.
  • Your skin's undertone matters: warm undertones are usually flattered by golden and copper tones, cool ones by ash and cooler shades.
  • A dramatic change, such as going from dark to light, is often done in stages so the hair isn't over-damaged.

Preparing for colour

  1. Don't wash your hair on the day of colouring — the natural oils on your scalp protect it from irritation.
  2. Tell your stylist if you've used henna or basma, or had a chemical straightening, in recent months — it affects the choice of product.
  3. If you're using a new dye or have reacted before, do an allergy test 48 hours in advance.
  4. Bring a photo of the colour you like — it makes it much easier for your stylist to understand what you want.

Caring for coloured hair

  • don't wash your hair for 48–72 hours after colouring — the colour is still setting;
  • use shampoo and conditioner made for coloured hair, ideally sulphate-free;
  • wash with warm, not hot, water — hot water strips colour faster;
  • always use a heat protectant before straighteners and hairdryers, and don't set the temperature too high;
  • use a nourishing mask once a week;
  • in summer, protect your hair from the sun with a hat or a product with UV filters;
  • before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply conditioner — it absorbs less chlorine;
  • trim your ends every 2–3 months to keep hair looking healthy.

Frequently asked questions

How often can I colour my hair?

Roots can usually be coloured every 4–6 weeks. Full colour, especially lightening, is best done less often so your hair has time to recover.

Why does my colour fade so quickly?

The most common causes are hot water, frequent washing, sulphate shampoos, sun and heat styling without protection.

Can I colour my hair during pregnancy?

Please talk to your doctor about this. Many women postpone colouring in the first months of pregnancy or choose gentler methods.
